Comments: My father Cpl. Julio Sigala served in the 187th in Korea (via Ft. Campbell)and made "both Jumps". He served from 1948 to 1952. He passed away in 1973. I don't know his company no. I have requested his service records but I don't know how long that takes or whether they were lost in "the fire". His discharge papers says he had 4 Bronz stars. I would like to know what the history books don't tell us. Do you remember him? He was from San Pedro, CA. The more I learn about the the 187th and what they went through the more I realize what heroes our fathers are. To all Thanks.

Comments: I know this is a long shot, but I was wondering if anyone here knew my grandfather, or knows how I can find information about him? His name was Harry Knotts, he was a paratrooper in the 187th ABN Regimental Combat team. He was from GA, had a wife and two daughters. He died on July 14th, 1953 from a hand granade as far as we know. My mom has always wanted to learn more about him and the places he went (she was only 1 1/2 when he died) but apparently his records were burned in a fire where they were being stored and there was not any kind of back up. He would have been 88 if he were alive today, he was born in 1917. If anyone can help us out to learn more about the family member we lost, we would be so grateful. If you need more info from me, I would be happy to answer any questions if you think you might have known him. Also, do you know of a good place to search further?
Thank you!
Kelly

Comments: I would like to hear from anyone who may have served with my uncle, PFC Eldon R Buchan or was held prisoner with him in Korea. Prior to the Army, he lived on a farm in Sauk Centre, MN and in St. Paul, MN with his brother and family. He was in the 187TH Airborne and was captured on May 25, 1951 and died while a POW on Oct 31, 1951. Information I have received to date, states he was held in Camp 1.

What I know from one of his letters Oct 1950 is that he was headed north. He stated he was driving in and that he wished he would be jumping. He stated his truck had just been stolen a few days before and that it required a new engine as it had been burned-up (if this jogs anyone's memory).

I hope to hear from someone who may have known my uncle.

You are all my heros! Thank you.

Comments: I'm looking for a grave marker for my dad. He served with 187rct during Korean Conflict. The marker now in place is a simple one noting that he served in Korea. I want to either place jump wings, and/or a brass copy of the 187 insignia. My dad always said he served in the Airborne, not the army. I know he would be thrilled to have that noted on his marker. I don't know what made the 187 so special, but he sure was proud to have been in it. I live near Fort Bragg, and still have not been able to honor my dad properly.

PERSONAL STORIES WANTED

Comments: I am a retired police officer who is becoming a high school history teacher. I am working on a masters thesis for college and would appreciate any personal stories of your time in korea from 48-53. My paper is titled, Korea; The price we paid for freedom. Not to try and say the rest of our hero veterans are not great americans, but I must focus on one particular area, and as a tribute to my father I have chosen the times he served in Korea. He passed away in 1994, before I ever had the chance to question him. He served in a medical group of 187rct. Please relate your memories, good or bad, in your own words. I will use your name only if you wish, and I will not change the meaning of what you say. This is a chance for you to tell your side of the story, and to teach the young men and women of today, the sacrifices Americans made in order for them to have their freedoms today. So much has been written about other wars and conflict, that the "forgotten war" is only a small notation in the course of teaching history. Not only do I want to record reflections for future generations, I want to learn why my father never talked to me about his memories. Please be personal and feel free to omit your name. If you are willing to share your stories, please attach an email address where I can contact you for follow up questions. Thank you and all of our soldiers, sailors, marines, and airman for giving me my freedom today. Thank you very much, and may God bless you and keep you safe.

Comments: I ran across the koreanwar.org site. It all sounds very familair. My Dad was then M/SGT John Nemeth. We lived at Camp Wood after the Korean War (Silver Star) in '54-'55. He was also in WWII with the 76th ID, 3rd Army (2 Bronze stars), then, believe it or not, at the age of 58 was in the 173rd Airborne Brigade at Bong Song, where he earned his third CIB-3 wars (one of 203 such soldiers in US Army history) and third Purple Heart. In '52 he was in Co. C 511th, 11th ABD at Ft. Campbell, with a chance to go to Germany, my Dad opted to go to Korea and the 187th. Just about caused a divorce. We rotated back to Bragg from Japan, and graduated from Fayetteville Senior HS ('60) there eventually with a stint in Augsburg, Germany (12-56 to-2-59) in between.

Our Dads are heroes of the first order.

Comments: Eddie's family is trying to locate on a map his last battle on 28 Mar 51. We believe his unit parachuted into a heavily defended Chinnese area and that he died from an enemy machine gunner's straffing near Sariwon, Songna-ri, or Songoa-ri (we're not sure). Uncle Eddie was a WWII vet, tough, a fanatic about small arms usefulness, and enjoyed a stiff drink. He was assigned to Company F, 187 Regimental Combat Team. If you knew SFC Eddie Kennedy or of him, please send me a e-mail. but right now we're just trying find out more about these places in North Korea (we think): Sariwon, Songna-ri, or Songoa-ri. Thanks.

Comments: I left a message for friends of my Dad's to contact me if the wish; Sgt. Howard I. Cram of the 187th Regimental Combat Team. He has been deceased for a long time now...since 1975, and I would be interested in hearing about what kind of soldier he was. I'm currently researching my Dad's side of the family and being a soldier seems to be in the blood! His father, Chester, was in WW1, in France....and my Great-Great Grandfather fought in the Civil War out of Indiana for the 151st Infantry. And as it goes, I married an Airborne, Infantryman (LRS). Well, again, I appreciate the chance to tell all you men and women thank you for your courage and sacrifice so that my children and I can savor such liberities. God Bless you and your families. And Happy New Year 2004

God Bless America, Patty Boner

Comments: My Dad passed away in 1975, when I was only 8. And I have his silk banner of the 187th making their jump into the sky, with their parachutes in full plume....a plane, a dragon I believe, silver jumpwings. It's stored away in a safe place along with one of his uniform jackets.

It's not a war to be romanticized, I know. These are just things I keep of my Dad's......and my husband is also a soldier serving today; having come home once already from Baghdad and on his way back again in the next 1-3 months. So, all of you who sacrifice for our liberities and others' rights to them are close to my heart.

I am seeking anyone who may have known my Dad, Sgt. Howard I. Cram, from Williamsburg, Michigan. If you knew him as a soldier or as a friend, I would be grateful to hear what you have to say.....even if you thought he was an SOB, which he often was at home. God rest his soul as I'm sure he's sought it and been forgiven. Apparently my Dad left a lot of his soul in Korea and I feel terribly for him for that.....I know that I canNOT even imagine NOR do I want to try to imagine what it must have been like for all of you men and women. God Bless You and Your Loved Ones.

Please email me if you happen to be the friend that called my Dad most holidays; I know it was at Christmas....and your last Christmas call was so unfortunate that time in 1975, I'm very sorry for your loss.

Thank you for the opportunity to try to find a connection and to give my thanks to our Nation's protectors....and Time Magazine's Person of the Year....The American Soldier. God Bless America!
