| ROBERT (BOB) SANFORD wrote on October 11, 2005 City and State: WOONSOCKET RI Unit: HQ.,HQ. - SV CO. Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN Comments: We have just returned from a wonderful reunion of Korean War Veterans that was held from Oct 3rd thru the 6th in Laughlin, Nevada which is 95 miles west of Las Vegas. Our group was small, about a dozen couples, but we joined in with a large group of others, over 300 from all over the U.S.A.-We found out that we did not need a ton of people to have a good time as we blended in with the other groups. Most of all, we learned that we should not have to wait another 50 or so years to do this again, so guess what? Yep, thats right. We want to do it again next year. Anybody care to join us. It will be around the same time next year. The only difference is that we will all be a year older(only in age). Want to come?? E-mail, call, or write me. I can guaranty that you will receive an answer. Keywords: |

TRYING TO FIND THE TRUE WHEREABOUTS |
| JEWELESTER JACKSON JR. wrote on September 23, 2005 City and State: CEDAR CREEK TX Unit: MY OLD UNIT IS 78TH ENGINEER BATTALIONI Service or Relationship: OTHER Comments: I am the sole surviving son of my father killed in action in South Korea on May 4, 1951, which happens to be my birthdate. His unit in Korea was 194th Engineer Battalion. His rank was PFC when he died. His name was Jewel Clark. Born in Waelder, Texas. There is a military gravemarker at the burial site, but there is some skepticism about his remains being there. I am aware any number of things can account for that with none of them being out of the ordinary, but what troubles me is I have not been able to find any official records of his death with the government except the the gravestone. Please if you know of any way I can obtain any information about my father or for what accounts for appears to be a cruel mystery, I would be eternally grateful. Even if you have no personal documents, photos or info you may share with me, I would be eternally grateful if you could direct me to the government agencies that could answer some of my lifelong questions about my father. I feel as if some sick joke has been played on me all my life because from what I can gleen from family members he was killed on my birthday when returning to the states to marry my mother. I was born May 4, 1951. His sister has recently passed away would you believe it on May 4, !992. I don't mean to sound like a sob case, but I have to admit over the course of the last 54 years of my life, these circumstances have remained at the forefront in my mind. I would appreciate any small thing anyone can do to help a man ignorant of some of the most basic things about his father become a realization. Sincerely Keywords: |

The unit was activated on Aug 19, 1950 and shipped to Ft Lewis for training. I believe that we shipped out of Ft Lawton on Jan 6, 1951 and arrived in Pusan sometime in early Feb. Mostly roads and bridges on the way to Kumwah and surrounding area. to the bet of my memory we always seemed to be operating in platoon or squad units, therefor I don't remember to much of the other companies. Some of the original boys (most were in the teen to early twenties) re-uped, a few settled in Oak Ridge. Not much contact with any of the original group. It was a n interesting time and from what I have read things changed afer most of us rotated out in December 51. Keywords: |

FEB 1953 TO AUG 1953. CO A AND H AND S. |
| DAVID HAYES wrote on April 19, 2000 City and State: MEADVIEW AZ Unit: CO A AND H-S Service or Relationship: ARMY VETERAN - KOREA Comments: Would like to reminisce with buddies who were in the 194th from Feb 1953 to Aug 1953. Co A and H and S. I was drafted, spent 16 weeks in basic and engineering training and then spent 15 months in the states going to schools doing several MOS's Finally they felt I neded to go to Korea, which if did for my last 7 months. Was on the General E. T. Collins boat going over and also coming back. Was sent to Co A at first as just a road maintance man and then to H and S as a clerk typist. The war was winding down and the truce talks were going on full blast, which meant very slowly. I would like to talk over things that happened while I was there. I met a lot of great people and although I can't remember many names, I'm sure I would remember the people and the things we did and the stories if the names were just mentioned to me. The one great thing the unit did while I was there was keep open the Han river during the monsoons of 1953. We put up a pontoon bridge and kept it open during some rough weather and conditions. It was the only supply road open to the front during that spring. We got a Presidential Unit citation for that action. We also helped to put the great forest fire that raged just before or just after the truce. I had forgotten that until I saw it on the last show of M*A*S*H. Wonder why I forgot that. It would be good to talk about that with someone who can remember it in more detail. Wasn't M*A*S*H a great show? I can remember going past the hospital many times. Hooker, the man who wrote M*A*S*H, served his time in the one just down the road from us. It was always a special show to me because of that. I can remember teaching a tentmate how to play the ukelele, playing softball (we had a great pitcher who was a professional back in the states. He was untouchable.), building that great theater for Raymond Burr's USO troup, and taking scouting trips with the Captain looking for new roads to improve in case the talks bogged down and the war got hot again and we had to split. Does any of this ring a bell? Keywords: General E.T. Collins troop ship, Lou Pocran, Bob Kemp, H and S Co., Co A, |
