| VERNA KONG wrote on July 20, 2010 CITY AND STATE: UNIT: 2ND INDIANHEAD DIVISION, 23RD INFANTRY (TANK COMPA SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: My father will soon be 82. He only told me the funny stories about the Korean War as I grew up and said he had been with UN peacekeeping. I never knew what it was really like for Dad until one day when I was decades old, and I realized he was telling a story about Korea with fear and anxiety in his voice and face. More stories have been coming, since. The Korean civilians that worked for the Army (2nd Indianhead Division) had been good friends and helpful to my father. The one he speaks of most often, however, is Wo-Sung, originally from North Korea, who crawled out into a fierce battle alone with a stretcher to rescue an injured U.S. captain. (This happened before the arrival of the Hawaii boys in July 1951.) Wo-Sung, a former math teacher in Japan, could speak Korean and English; after this act of bravery, the captain arranged for him to become a translator attached to the Division. After my father returned home to Hawaii, he never saw his Korean friends again. If anyone remembers my Dad -- especially Wo-Sung or his family -- I'd like to hear from you.
