REMEMBERING MY TIME IN KOREA WITH THE 326TH |
| MEL FRIEDMAN wrote on March 8, 2010 CITY AND STATE: LAKEWOOD CO UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: ARMY VETERAN Comments: Keywords: My memory fails, but I was in Korea from the fall of 1951 to late summer, early fall 1953. Our company helped support a group of Korean orphans. Our commanding officer was from Manassas, VA and we named the orphanage after his home town ("Manassas Manor" or something like that. The fighting stopped during the time I was on the way back to the U.S. When we arrived in Seattle, our ship was greeted by governors of many states. Does this sound familiar to anyone? |

| LEROY W. GARDNER wrote on March 8, 2005 CITY AND STATE: UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: ARMY VETERAN - KOREA Comments: Anyone looking for information on units in Korea. There may be information at the US Archives II, in College Park, Maryland, about SOME ASA units in Korea during the Korean War. I have looked at the file for the 501st CRG,and, believe me,it is nowhere near complete. Most of the "after action" reports about ASA units in Korea is still being held by the National Security Agency, at Fort G. G. Meade, Maryland. After all, the war still isn't over, is it? Possibly some of what we knew then is still relevant, who knows? Keywords: |

| GEORGE F. DRAKE wrote on November 20, 1998 CITY AND STATE: BELLINGHAM WA UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: Comments: I am planning a monument in our city to commemorate the humanitarian aid that the US Forces in Korea rendered to the lost, homeless and orphaned children of Korea during and after the war. My unit (326th Communications Reconnaisance Company, Eye Corps) alone was responsible for helping about 250 orphans and in three years friends and relatives, former high school classmates and others sent over 30 Tons (!) of material aid to help the orphans via our army unit at our behest. I think this humanitarian aid rendered by the GI during the time of conflict has been totally unrecognized. It was not a command decision ordering the GIs to rescue the kids, hug them, bathe them, dress them, feed them and give them the love and care needed for their survival, it was out of compassion and a feeling that these children were just like their kid brothers and sisters (or children) back home. I just got back from my first visit to Korea since leaving in 1953. I had breakfast last week with the woman who managed the orphanage for our company in 1952-53. She is 88 years old and still very active. We were joined by a former resident of the orphanage who had been adopted by a Norwegian family. He had returned to Korea to try to find his birth mother and, against all odds, he found her. I'll keep you informed of my progress on finding funds for the monument. Keywords: |
