Comments: My memories of Korea are that it was all black, gray and white and void of any color. Strange. I don't remember any color. We were stationed on top of a mountain and for the most part, with the exception of R & R, rarely ventured away during the week. Maintenance schedules kept me buy during the week but we had week ends off. On week ends, I remember throwing my carbine over one shoulder and my new Bosley camera over the other and hiking alone down the mountain to Pusan to take pictures. I never saw any action nor did I ever fire my weapon. The cease fire agreement was signed when I was aboard ship headed for Korea.

Comments: In D Battery at Bliss. to Japan and trained on New SP 40s. Attached to Marine Bn (Maj Smith); Inchon, Seoul w/marines then with them invading at Iwon. D Battery at various locations around Hamhung while portions of the Bn went to Yalu. Covered withdrawal and evacuation. Ending with positons on the Hamhung City Dump as docks were blown up. We were, I think, last units to board small ships on Christmas Day. Back to the South and dury around airfields..finally to Seoul. My battery was integrated in early 51. I arrived as cannoneer on M-42, and became Squad Ldr. of Quad fifty. I was recruited for Gen MacArthur's Honor Guard and rotated to Japan. Served in Gen Ridgeway's then under Gen Mark Clark;'s Honor Guard. Nearly froze until got parkas near Hamhung in November '50. In Korea: Remember Sammy Plaines, Gratton Karnes, SFC Smith, Capt Fink. Pfc Shaeffer...all of my M-42. For old friends. I got out but go commission in reserves and recalled in December 63 for Korea..I stayed in and retired in February 74. I have some vital images to share if anyone is interested in how to freeze in uniform.

It is very hard to find any info for units that were not organic to a
Division. Such as the 50th AAA Aw Bn (SP). which was active at the
Inchon Invasion, the battle for Seoul, the Iwon Invasion, the drive to the
Yalu and the help it provided in extracting the Marines from the Chosin
Area.
This unit was attached to the 1st Marine Div., the 7th Inf Div., to the
3rd Inf Div., and then finally to 8thArmy, Yet it is never given mention
in any listings pertaining to these Divisions.
Stanton in his book titled ,"America's Tenth Legion" wrote a short
paragraph about the great effectiness of the 50ths twin 40 Bofors and
the Quad 50 cal.guns and their annilization of the enemy on Hill 1081
at Chiphung-ni.
Other than this short paragraph, it is very difficult to find any info
about the units, battles it served in. The Divisions it was attached
to, rarely ever mention this non-organic unit.
Sincerly,
Bob Matis
