Looking for buddies

Mark Ruble wrote on 2008-07-09 20:56:12.0

Comments: My father William Ruble was a member of the 5th Regimental Combat Team in "C" company from June or July of 1951 until about August or September of 1952 when he was taken from the front line and sent to Koji Island. The exact months are unclear in his mind. Several men from his unit were plucked off the line and sent to Koji Island. He is unsure how many men were taken off the line from his unit but he thinks less than 6.

He remembers the young faces of the men he served with in great detail but the names slips his mind. Dad was a short man about 5'-6" tall, with black hair. He talked about his platoon sergeant from Louisiana a man dad respected and admired greatly. Dad was a corporal in his unit. Dad said he remembered a man who was either a trainer or a sparing partner of a famous boxer in his unit but is unsure what the mans name was.

Dad never returned to his unit after Koji Island. After Koji Island duty dad went back to the states and helped train new men going to Korea for a brief time and then came home.

When I asked my dad what he remembers the most about Korea he would reply. The winter there was damn cold and the summer there was damn hot.

Dad came home to West Virginia where he was born and raised and still lives to this day. If anyone knew my dad and remembers him he would love to talk to you. He would love to know his buddies are still out there and doing well.

Thank You Mark Ruble

Comments: I am an english teacher and gulf war veteran who volunteers regularly at the 5th regiment sponsored Samdong Boys town orphanage in Seoul. I have started a site on www.facebook.com called Sam Dong Boys Town Orphanage to recruit volunteers and teach people about the origins of this orphanage. I was hoping someone from the sth regiment could give me information or share links with me in support of my recruiting efforts. My father was a non-deployed korean war veteran of the 1st airborne division until he was transfered to the JAG, so the korean war history of this orphanage is not only relevant but very important to me. please share your knowledge and gifts with me. thanks

Dan Lewis wrote on 2008-06-10 12:29:40.0

Comments: I'm looking for information about my father's time in Korea with the 5TH RCT (1950 - 1951). He passed away last week and never did speak much about his time in combat. I recall mention of a place he called "Death Valley" or "Seven Miles of Hell", but very little else. He did receive a Purple Heart and, I think, a Bronze Star. I just retired from the US Air Force and didn't get to have him with me. My children would also like to know more. If anyone knew him or served with him then, we would be very happy to hear from you. If there is another site with more-detailed information on the 5TH RCT in Korea, I'd appreciate that, as well. Thank you.
