TEAM CONCLUDES AGENT ORANGE INVESTIGATION IN KOREA |
| DAVID ANDERSON wrote on January 9, 2012 CITY AND STATE: ELK WA UNIT: COMPANY C 51ST SIGNAL BN. SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: ARMY VETERAN Comments: December 29, 2011 By Walter T. Ham IV, Eighth Army Public Affairs YONGSAN GARRISON, South Korea (Dec. 29, 2011) -- The Republic of Korea-United States Joint Investigation Team announced that it discovered no evidence of Agent Orange during its probe into claims that the toxic defoliant was buried on Camp Carroll. Led by Pokyong National University Chief Professor Doctor Gon Ok and U.S. Forces Korea Engineer Col. Joseph F. Birchmeier, the team concluded its eight- month investigation Dec. 29 at a press conference in the Chilgok County Office. The investigation began in May 2011 following a report on KPHO TV in Phoenix where U.S. veterans claimed they buried Agent Orange on Camp Carroll in 1978. Birchmeier said the bilateral investigation found no evidence that Agent Orange was buried on Camp Carroll and discovered no risk to public health on the U.S. Army post. I want you to know that we have found no definitive evidence that Agent Orange was buried or stored Camp Carroll, said Birchmeier, the lead U.S. investigator. http://www.army.mil/article/71403/Team_concludes_Agent _Orange_investigation_in_Korea/ Keywords: Agent Orange,Korea,Camp Carroll |

KOREAN AO EXPOSURE AND THYROIDS |
| RON WEBER wrote on January 8, 2012 CITY AND STATE: TIGARD OR UNIT: 7TH INFANTRY DIVISION - CAMP CASEY SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: ARMY VETERAN Comments: I have an eight year running claim. Nothing new- we are all struggling. HOWEVER, after 35 years of declining health (the same problems you are all fighting), I was sent to an ENDROCRINOLOGIST. I was diagnosed with AO related Thyroid failure. I also had a PARA THYROID removed (We have four of them, so that is no problem). After the day surgery and taking one small daily Thyroid pill, I experienced a MEDICAL MIRACLE. No kidding. I was sick, depressed, overwait and in cronic pain FOR YEARS. As a mountain climber and marathon runner, I was reduced to a 250 pound slug on a scooter. Sometimes I needed help even getting off the toilet or a chair. The Endocrinologist WARNED ME. ' IN ABOUT TWO WEEKS, YOU WILL FEEL LIKE YOU ARE 30 YEARS OLD AGAIN. He was right! AGENT ORANGE CAUSED ALL THIS!!! My low point was at 49 years old. Today, less than 18 months after I met the Endocrinologist, I am now hiking five to ten miles up steep mountain trails. I walk without any assistive devises. I lost sixty pounds and kept it off. THE BEST PART IS THE PRESCRIPTIONS! I quit taking over ten different Rx's for Depression, Severe Osteoporosis, Chronic Pain, Diabetes and much more. I WAS ON 126 MGS OF OXICONTIN PER DAY! Today I use aspirin and Percocet. BUT The Time Has Come to go off the Percocet. I am now trailing off that and doing OK. IF YOU WERE IN KOREA IN THE LATE 1960s, AND WERE ANYWHERE NEAR AGENT ORANGE SPRAYING, PLEASE HAVE YOUR THYROID AND PARA THYROIDS CHECK! IT HAS BROUGHT ME BACK FROM THE LIVING DEAD TO A HEALTHY, HAPPY, AND PRODUCTIVE MEMBER OF SOCIETY. Feel free to contact me. My reason was simple -I'm tired of the BS from the VA saying we have to prove boots on the ground for the DMZ and we were not exposed to these chemicals. We are all not getting any younger and we are all experiencing a lot of the same medical problems as the guys that were in Viet Nam. I also told the folks in his office that the Army guys that were stationed at the Z were being treated the same way. We will have to wait and see what happens. Thank you for your service in Korea. | LAWRENCE DELARME wrote on November 5, 2011 CITY AND STATE: LAPORTE IN UNIT: B CO 3RD BN 23 INFANTRY 2ND DIVISION SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: ARMY VETERAN Comments: I served in the DMZ in 1968 but was unaware of the use of Agent Orange untill 2007 when a friend of mine called who knew I was there at that time and told me to look up Agent Orange use in Korea in 1968-69. I came across a news confrence with a Defense Dept General in 2000 who said " it is not a conspiracy and we are not hiding anything it just fell through the cracks". 32 years of cracks ???? He also said that the Defense Dept was sending a letter to all the men stationed at the DMZ in certain units confirming the use of Agent Orange. It is now 2011 and I have still not received any letter. The answer is the almighty dollar. No DMZ veteran received any benefits prior to 2001 which translates into hundreds of millions or possibly billions of dollars. I put in a claim in 2007 and was given 20% for Diabetes in 2008. I have multiple diseases secondary to Diabetes but I am being denied because of long term medical records. Many veterans are in the same boat as me. Not knowing you were exposed you did not have anual visits to the doctors office and thus medical records are scarce. I have read many blogs relating to benefits and information on Agent Orange but everyone is missing the big picture. We served our country honorably when our country needed us and they knowingly put our health in harms way and kept it a secret for 32 years. I wonder how many DMZ vets died of cancer without ever knowing they were exposed ? I wonder how many DMZ vets still do not know they were exposed ? The Dmz Vets need to organize and confront the Government about this secret coverup. Keywords: Imjin scout / OP Gladys / patrols / ambush |

Upon my husbands death I applied for all the usual stuff including accrued benefits. After 3 denials, i received DIC and medical. I want to know why I can receive retro accrued benefits for IHD that he filed for in 1998,2000,2002. All of which were denid "No boots on ground in Nam. I filed for accrued retro compensation under Nehmer in Jan. 2011, denied again "no boots on ground in Nam."I feel I have been discriminated against because I should fall under Nehmer protection Like that of Nam Widows I had no idea AO discriminated due to boundaries!! When my husband came home in 1971 He was having severe nose bleeds, that in turn resulted in very high blood pressure and high cholesterol. His first heart attack was in 1985. 1990 diabetes 11,thyroid, 5 by-passes, 1997 received difb/pacemaker. Also most all bypasses blocked. He was also told he needed heart transplant. I watched my husband die a slow death. He was never right after Military got through with him. The Widows of these Vets need to be compensated also like those of the Nam Widows. Nehmer, was about the VA making it next to impossible for AO victims to receive SC. Duh, isn't this the same thing for Korean Vets and their Widows? My husband was with the 5/38th 2ond. div.1968- 1969. If anyone has any knowledge of this unit Please tell me about it. I have searched on line to no avail. RECENT VA NEWS RELEASES |
| DAVID ANDERSON wrote on August 31, 2011 CITY AND STATE: ELK WA UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: ARMY VETERAN Comments: Recent VA News Releases To view and download VA news releases, please visit the following Internet address: http://www.va.gov/opa/pressrel Over $2.2 Billion in Retroactive Agent Orange Benefits Paid to 89,000 Vietnam Veterans and Survivors for Presumptive Conditions WASHINGTON (August 31, 2011)- Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki announced today that more than $2.2 billion in retroactive benefits has already been paid to approximately 89,000 Vietnam Veterans and their survivors who filed claims related to one of three new Agent Orange presumptive conditions. On August 31, 2010, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) amended its regulations to add ischemic heart disease, hairy cell leukemia and other chronic B-cell leukemias, and Parkinson's disease to the list of diseases presumed to be related to exposure to Agent Orange. "As the President said to the American Legion yesterday, VA is committed to ensuring Veterans and their families receive the care and benefits they have earned," said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki. "I encourage all potentially eligible Veterans to apply as soon as possible to preserve the most favorable effective date for payments." For new claims, VA may authorize up to one year of retroactive benefits if a Veteran can show that he or she has experienced one of those conditions since the date of the regulatory change. VA has reviewed, and continues to review, thousands of previously filed claims that may qualify for retroactive benefits under a long-standing court order of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California in Nehmer vs. U.S. Veterans Administration. "VA encourages survivors of Veterans whose death may be due to one of the three diseases to file a claim for dependency and indemnity compensation," added Under Secretary for Benefits Allison A. Hickey. Secretary Shinseki's decision to add these conditions to the list of Agent Orange presumptive conditions was based on a study by the Institute of Medicine, which indicated a positive association between exposure to certain herbicides and the subsequent development of one or more of the three conditions. Potentially eligible Veterans include those who were exposed based on duty or visitation in Vietnam or on its inland waterways between January 9, 1962, and May 7, 1975; exposed along the demilitarized zone in Korea between April 1, 1968, and August 31, 1971; or exposed due to herbicide tests and storage at military bases within and outside of the United States. The Agent Orange Claims Processing System website located at https://www.fasttrack.va.gov/AOFastTrack/ may be used to submit claims related to the three new presumptive conditions. The website makes it easy to electronically file a claim and allows Veterans and their physicians to upload evidence supporting the claim. It also permits online viewing of claim status. Beyond the three new presumptive disabilities, Veterans may file online at VA's My-eBenefits web site at: https://www.ebenefits.va.gov/ebenefits-portal/ebenefits.portal. They can check the status of their claim with a premium account (confirming their identity), and use a growing number of online services. Servicemembers may enroll in My-eBenefits by using their Common Access Card at anytime during their military service, or before they leave during their Transition Assistance Program briefings. Veterans may also enroll through their myPay or MyHealtheVet accounts by visiting their local VA regional office or Veteran Service Organization, or by calling 1-800-827-1000. For more information about Agent Orange presumptives and disability compensation, go to http://www.publichealth.va.gov/exposures/agentorange/. For questions about Agent Orange, Veterans may call VA's Special Issues Helpline at 1-800-749-8387 and press 3. Keywords: Agent Orange, korea,Recent VA News Releases |
