TROOP CARRIER SHIPS

UNIT:

SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: AIR FORCE VETERAN

Comments: I am addressing the NAVY folks here and hope you can
help. My father headed off to the Korean War at the
outbreak. He was in the Air force as a radio
mechanic with the 605 Tactical Air Control SQ.of the
502 Tactical Control Group. He shipped out of San
Franciso, CA on a troop ship named USS HOWIGE. The
ship ran into a typhoon going over to Toyoko, Japan.
They picked up cargo and more troops. Then headed for
Korea. Is this the correct spelling of the ship, is
this ship still afloat? Any info will be greatly
appreciated. Thank You Vets!

Comments: All i know is that he was from the austin, manor, or elgin area in texas and that he was a SN in the Navy and served durring the Korean war (grandma always called it the Korean Conflict). Grandma claims he was at one point a chief warren officer until he got in a fight with someone and the navy demoted him. Just trying to find anyone who might know how to find out more information about him or even someone who may have known him personally. i know this is a long shot but figured someone out there might have some advice for me.

I'm just as proud of him as he is of me.
