I WAS IN VF-653 AND VF-151 |
| NEIL O. MYERS wrote on December 5, 2011 CITY AND STATE: AIKEN SC UNIT: VF-653 AND VF-151 SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: NAVY VETERAN Comments: Was on board USS Boxer when truce was signed. We had General Quarters roughly 2:00 AM. Captain came on squake box and said bogies from N. Korea headed our way, get to battle stations on double, but they turned at shore line and went to S. Korea for one last bombing run before truce was signed. Recall our task force was fired on by N. Korean shore batteries once. Shells fell in water before reaching nearest escort DD. Next launch our squadron bombed them. Several on deck booed since it was our only encounter (in kidding). I rigged a radio with antenna trailing over side and could listen to troops in fox holes in Korea. Recall some sailors with lines on clothes trailing ship to wash them - water tore them up. Recall details of typhoons on USS Valley Forge and USS Boxer. Rough!! After truce, made fast run to California and soon a return to college. I kept logs of pilots and planes. Scheduled planes into maintenance. Recorded pilot's hours and what they shot. Was in office under 6 gun mount so don't hear well today because no warning when they practiced. Would not take anything for having done it. Sorry so many friends are leaving now. Wonder how many recall short arms inspections upon returning to ship in Yokosuka? THE 6,AUG.1952 TRAGEDY |
| T.E. MOORE wrote on August 11, 2011 CITY AND STATE: UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: OTHER Comments: A major carrier fire occured at 0616 on 6,Aug.1952 aboard the USS Boxer CV-21. Having launched eight pre-dawn hecklers, USS Boxer CV-21 became prey to a portside hanger deck fire. An aircraft gun fired a round, another aircraft's fuel tank exploded igniting other aircraft. A 500lb.bomb cooked off, tossing more aircraft about. On the flight deck 60 more fully fuelled and armed aircraft awaited launch. Captain Marshall B.Gurney did not launch them, and reduced the ship's speed from 30 knots, and directed that as many aircraft as possible be re-spotted foreward of the ship's island, and to jettison all the ordnance. The fire was attacked with foam and water from the number two elevator, which was lowered with fire control teams, and an aircraft with it's engine running to clear the smoke. The fire drove 63 crewmen over the ship's side, all of whom were picked up by the USS Boxer's escorts, trapping others below decks, and forcing the abandonment of some engineering spaces. After five hours the fire was out, at a cost of nine dead, 30 injured, and 18 aircraft damaged or destroyed. The dead were; Lt.James E.Shropshire Jr.-Flight-Surgeon CVG-2-Birmingham,Al--AT2.Billy Gene Soden-Det."A"-VC-35-Ceres,Ca--MM1.James V.Wark-CV-21- El Monte,Ca--HN.Richard S.Taylor-VF-24-Kendallville, In--AA.I.Caneles-VA-65--PN3.Harold V.Cowger-VF-24-- AT3.W.D.Burdette-Det."A"-VC-35--PFC.Arthur M.Kozuki- USMC Det.-CV-21-Honolulu,Hi--CPL.Terrell R.Roulston- USMC Det.-CV-21-Sasakwa,Ok---God bless these brave men.------------------------------- Keywords: USS BOXER CV-21 KOREAN WAR 6,AUG.1952 MAJOR CARRIER FIRE |

INFO ON TEX ROBINSON A FLYER OFF CARRIER? |
| LESTER DEAN ROBINSON wrote on November 22, 2007 CITY AND STATE: ROSEVILLE CA UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: I am seeking anyone with information or knowledge of Calvin Lester Robinson. He sometimes went by the name of Tex or Robbie. This was my father, and I know very little about him. I had been told: He was a pilot who flew off of Air Craft Carriers, during the Korean war. Would that mean he was in the Air Force or the Navy? Could it have been either? He was a Texan. He played many musical instruments, especially Guitar, Fiddle, piano, and accordion. He loved to entertain people. (He was a good Yodeler- in that Texas style) He was tall (6 2 to 6 4) and had a good sense of humor, practical joker, And of course he loved to chase the women. I know he did not die in Korea- I would not be here. I was born in 59. He did maintain a Pilots License after he returned home, he used to take us up in a Cessna on occasion. I dont have much more info, than that. I dont know if he is alive or dead! The lack of knowledge has pretty much possessed me over the years since he disappeared. Thank you, for anything you can tell me, no matter how big or slight. I cant describe this feeling of knowing nothing of my Dad. It is as if he vanished from the earth 40 years ago. There are many stories he has held in and we do not or probably will never know about. He told us about this explosion for the first time. He was talking about his life in the Navy and I told him Dad you are lucky to be alive. He started to choke up, grabbed his face and cry. He then said his friends were killed in that explosion. I could feel the pain my dad had in his heart at that time. There was silence and I comforted him and sadly told us about the explosion. My father's name is Joe Ollervides. He retired from the Navy in the early 1970's. Would anyone of you remember him. I came across this website on my search for the USS Boxer. Thank you. Mini Kaplan Keywords: |

The worker made no effort to let anyone know of his demise, yet my father saw this and had the transmission lifted. It could have been an engine too, I just can't remember. The worker wanted to go back to work since he could not afford to take the time off to fix his hand (dangling fingers). My father then went to all his buddies and asked them to put their pocket money into a hat and helped the worker out to get the operation needed and time off. This worker was deeply obliged to my father and did many things for him afterwards. I wish I could find who this worker was and his family, but this was a long time ago. i also wish I could find some of the crew mates he was with. Feel free to email me. jason@milescoscientific.com Keywords: My father Raymond Keehr served on the Boxer in, I think, 52 and 53. He is still alive and I will ask him more info.
