THE BUTCHERS OF KAPSAN-1951

Comments: Vice Adm.J.J.(Jocko)Clark,USN, was informed by ROK
Guerrillas that North Korean Commissars from four
adjoining districts were going to meet secretly at
Kapsan,Korea on 28-30 Oct.1951. High altitude photos
of the twelve major buildings and barracks at Kapsan
were ordered by Adm.Clark. Then on the morning of 29,
Oct.1951, eight USS ESSEX CV-9 USN AD-Skyraider aircraft loaded with 1.000 pound bombs, 250 pound general-purpose bombs, and napalm bombs, struck Kapsan
as the Commissars were meeting, three bombs hit squarely(on the main bomb shelter), then the planes
strafed the compound. The area was flattened into
flaming rubble. The ROC Guerrillas moved in closer to
take count; 144 party officals, and 376 enemy soldiers
killed, all 12 buildings destroyed. Enraged, the
North Korean radio announced a reward would be given
for the capture of the "Butchers of Kapsan"............

THE 16,SEPT.1951 BANSHEE CRASH

Comments: On 16,Sept.1951, a VF-172 F2H2 Banshee aircraft
unable to drop it's tail-hook, landed on the USS Essex
CV-9, leapt the flight-deck plane barriers, and trundled forward of the ship's island, on it's way to
an inevitable collision. The pilot"Lt.(jg.)John K.
Keller" presumably guessed the deck crews had already
re-fuelled and re-armed the aircraft neatly parked
along the port-side of the flight deck, for his aircraft veered sharply to starboard, ramming four
un-armed and un-refuelled aircraft, and disintegrating
in a huge fireball. Seven men were killed, twenty-
seven men were injured, and four aircraft destroyed.
With swift damage-control and ship handling, the USS
Essex CV-9 resumed air-operations the next day.------
The men killed were; AD3.Wade H.Barfield-VF-51-Columbia,SC---AA.Roger C.Hammond-CV-9-Great Falls,MT---AA.Charles L.Harrell-VF-51-Phenix City,AL---AOC.Kenneth E.Neifer-VF-51-Bowling Green,OH---AN.Vernon Netolieky-VF-172-Cedar Rapids,IA---ADC.James

Comments: I am trying to find photos of a strange crew aboard the
USS
Essex during the Korean War. There is a gentleman that
served Aboard her during the Korean War. He wanted
heavy
Equipment but got moved to the Ice cream division. This
gentleman is moving into a independent living situation
and my wife assists people with that she thought it
would
been nice to locate an old photo of that area of the
ship and maybe a few shots of people around that
station
to make him feel a bit more welcome. So if anyone has
any
photos like these let me know. Also does anyone know
the
MOS for that position. Thank you your time.
