When the WASP was converted in Brooklyn Navy Yard, new gun sponsons for her 5"-54 caliber guns were installed on both sides of its hull. The Panama Canal locks are only 110 feet wide, so the WASP could no longer go through the locks. The WASP transited the Suez Canal in order to reach Japan.
Sincerely,
BUBBLEHEAD BOB

Comments: My grandfather, Radio Communicator, Ed Ballard, was on the WASP when it sank (not sure of exact details as he never really liked to talk about it) but I would love to hear from shipmates, family members of shipmates, or those who knew him and other stories. Thanks in advance, a loving granddaughter, Carla

Comments: I am lookiing for former shipmate, John (Jack) O'Brien from Brooklyn N.Y. We were on the Wasp (V-2 Div) along with Sam Panciroli the night of the collison with the U.S.S. Hobson. The three of us went from Bainbridge to NATTC Jacksonville to NATTC Millington, TN for Aviation Machinist school and then aboard the Wasp... Jack was a very good basketball player and he played on the Wasp Basketball Team that had 45 wins and 2 losses.

Comments: I was assigned aboard the USS Wasp CVS-18 during 68-69, in V-4 Division (Aviation Fuels). The V-4 Division Officer was Lt. M.R. McNee, and I am searching for any of my shipmates who were aboard the Wasp at that time. I have two cruisebooks, one of which is the 25th anniversary edition, for the ships company. Contact me via e-mail at: gekernaghan@yahoo.com . I'd especially like to hear from Hugo Herold, C.L. Ward, Frank Wardell, R.D. Jones, or the Van Dett brothers.

Comments: LeRoy Denend was a radar operator on the uss Wasp during ww2. LeRoy is my father (passed away in 1994) when i was in my 40's he told my a story of a delay bomb from the Japanese went thru two decks a blew up in the mess hall. I had never heard a thing about it for all those years. He was in tears by the time he finished the story of how he had to help pull all the young sailors, most in pieces, out of the water. The ship made it back to shore on its own. Can you give me more information..Thank you, Tom Denend

Comments: The HOBSON was classified and named DMS-26 )Destroyer Minesweeper prior to the collison with the WASP near the Azores in the Atlantic Ocean on 4/26/52. She was no longer (DD-464). Check it out!
Also, the USS WASP left Norfolk, VA on 9/16/53 crossing the Atlantic Ocean and transiting the Suez Canal on her way to Japan. The WASP could not transit the Panama Canal, due to the recent addition of new gun sponsons for her 5"-54 cal guns mounted on port and starboard sides of the vessel. The Panama Canal locks are only 110 feet wide and WASP would never pass through the locks. Check it out!
I rode WASP during that period and have a cruise book showing WASP transiting the Suez Canal.
Respectfully,
Robert F. Marble TMCS(SS) USN (Ret)
