Comments: I am an American Red Cross Volunteer and have been looking for Lennart Yonson (Lenard Johnson?) who is in a photo of the American Red Cross Korean War calendar, printed in 2000 and photo dated 1950. He is standing around a piano with 6 other United Nations Servicemen and a Red Cross Gal.
He must have worked in the 200 bed Hospital that was sent to Korea by the Swedish government soon after the war began, which later became a 400 bed hospital.
Any information will be greatfully appreciated.
He has a uniform on and the only patch is on his right sleeve. Sweden?

Comments: Hej Göran!
The medal you got was the ww2 version of the medal of freedom wich was created in 1945 and given to civilians that has helped the US, for instance to ww2 resistance fighters. I got the medals of an other veteran of the swedish field hospital in Korea - Gillis Röing. Among his medals are also this version of the Medal of Freedom. Interested if you have any information about this Röing and what he did at the field hospitals. Inn 1963 the medal of freedom was instituted again but with a new apperence and is more prestigious.

Comments: After returning from Korea in 1953 I recived an American Medal. I am trying to find out which medal it was. The medal has been lost. As far as I can remember it was a Medal of Freedom. However, since this is a very prestigeous award I think it must be some other medal, but which?

Comments: I was on the main gate when the call came through that there were people in the ocean and to send help. There was a typhoon coming in and the sea had some very high waves coming into the beach. I called someone who called the US Army Hialeha Coumpound in Pusan for help. We had no helicopters but the Army did. Some Air Force people went and the Army sent MPs. It was daylight but when the swimmers went in attached to ropes, they were washed back up on the beach. They were cut up pretty bad.
The report was that 6 people from the Swedish Army Hospital had been watching the waves come in when they were suddenly swept off the beach and into the water. They managed to make it to a place where they could stand up but could not get back to the beach. No one could get a helicopter up because of the winds. All personnel in the water disappeared. I read in the "Stars and Stripes" more of the details than I knew that day. Later, my brother sent me a newspaper clipping from the Cincinnati Enquirer about the drownings.
I will always remember the good things that the Swedish Medical people did for us.
