Comments: Arrived at K-10 in Jan. Freezing Cold. First night was spent in tent (the oil stove blew up during the night, soot covered everyone). Assigned to the 18th AIO as payroll and personnel specialist. Lived in quonset near the hospital and gymnasium. Left about mid Dec. and spent next three years at Eglin AFB, FL. Would like to hear from anyone from the 18th AIO.

Now lives in Port Richey, Fl. with his wife.He has always been especially proud to have been a wartime enlisted man with the 18thFBG.I would love to find someone in Florida who knew him.Like most vets, he did his duty honorably and then returned home to pick up where he left off.Since retiring he has begun to wonder how his fellow vets were and are.

Comments: I served at K-46, Wonju in AIO. Would liketo hear from someone who has photo's of base, planes, runway & etc. I was a heavy equipment operator. We had our equipment at Motor Pool by Flight line.

Would like any information on Ross Torson from Coffeyville, Kansas, "Butler" SAAF from Cape Town South Africa, Lt. Keyser who was in AIO at K-46. Does anyone remember the house boy named Mousey from K-46. I was wondering what ever happened to him?

Comments: I arrived at K-10 from Japan in May 1952. I served with the 18th Fighter Bomber Wing. After about 2 weeks I was flown to K-46 near Wonju, this was the advanced base. We served with the South African Air Force there. We used F-51 Mustangs and so did they. They flew bombing missions every day. We lost some planes and several got shot up. I worked in AIO - as a heavy equipment operator. I plowed snow, worked on roads and runways. The winter was very cold and we didn't have warm boots or clothes. The guard duty at night around the planes was bitter cold. The guys on the flight line had a rough job in the cold too. We slept in tents about five or six men to a tent. In 1953 part of our unit and all the planes went to K-55 - Osan and the F-86 Sabre jet was the one to replace the F-51. I have alot of memories of those times, we did a good job and I'm proud to have served in the Korean War. The 18th Fighter Bomber Unit was a proud unit. From Korea I returned to the states and served at Tooele Ordanance Depot, Utah. I have alot of stories and etc. in case anyone would like to contact me. All,

It is with great sorrow that I inform you of the passing of my father
this morning at his home in Bellevue. He died of natural causes.

Would each of you please by any means that you may have, contact all of
my father's dear friends in the 18th FWA and inform them of this.

His first love was my mom, his second was flying. He had a wonderful
and heroic career in the Air Force and was loved and respected by those
who knew him. As a father he was a loving and gentle man. He will be
missed by all who knew him.

Dad has lived and breathed the 18th FWA for many years and was extremely
happy that there was interest in this great organization from others. I
am happy to know that the work and dedication that he has put into this
group has paid such great dividends to so many.

Bud Biteman has finished his final approach and has landed successfully
at the pearly gates. He now can say he has successfully completed the
most important mission known to man...life.

With warm regards,

Jim Biteman

Combined unit Reunion outcome

We're trying to work up a joint reunion in Capetown for Sept (7-13)
'97 of their SAKWVA and our 18th Fighter Wing

Oct 97 follow up:

Our Sept '97 Reunion with the South African Air Force was beyond our
wildest hopes ... the 29 of us were treated more like visiting royalty
than a bunch of Aging, Ancient Aviators... and we revelled in it!

We knew that the South Africans were a hospitable bunch, but had no
idea that they would take us to their bosoms so quickly... we met as
comparative strangers when we climbed off the airplane, but a week
later we were all life-long friends! (and can hardly wait to
go back.....)

I could go into considerable detail ... for your PERSONAL edification,
but it would be much too lengthy for inclusion on your website... all
about SAAF Generals, Lions, Elephants, Zebras and Giraffes... what an
amazing country, and what amazing, friendly people.
