This was a cloudy day with the base of the clouds about 1000 feet about the station. two F-84s returning from up North and low on fuel called for a bearing, I gave them a Northerly bearing which was not taken without concern. The two pilots talked it over and one continued South and the other took the heading North. About every two minutes I would requests a transmission so I could fix a new heading. At one point the pilot asked about the base of the clouds. I informed him they were about 1000 feet above my locations. As a aircraft gets near the station the null of the signal gets wider on the bearing wheel, when this happened I informed the pilot he was near the station. I had no more than told him and he broke out over the station. There was no other communications between us. he put his aircrafts nose down and landed at K-37. The runway was far to short for his aircraft and he crashed. I was told later he had run off the end of the runway. I also found out that he was out of fuel when he passed over my D/F. The timing was just right, he was able to land at K-37. I was told the pilot was safe. I was also told the other aircraft went down between South Korea and Japan in the water, he was also safe. After so many years Ive taken interest in some of the activities I was part of. It would be interesting to hear from someone that knew of this incident or was part of it. He was a radio operator and crashed flying over "The Hump" in China during the war. In '50, he was stationed in El Paso and was a member of SAC. Hanson from Inkster, North Dakota. He was the crew chief of F-80 S/N 44-85172 with the "Black Sheep" in Misawa. He died in 1960 when my wother was 11 years old and after he retired at Grand Forks Air Force Base. When my mother was born in 1949, he named the airplane after her "Vicki Ree". I am trying to recreate the airplane (in 1/48 scale) for both my mother and grandmother. All I have to go on are two old newspaper articles about the deployment and a black and white photo of poor quality. It is very difficult to find information from that era. I am trying to find out what the color scheme looked like. I have found out information that the nose and the stripe just above the rudder were yellow. But, that is were the information ends. I can not find out if the aircraft was polished or painted. If it was painted, what color? As far as the airplane goes, I have had a little more luck. It was built as an F-80A and served in Misawa. It has no known kills acredited and was later converted into an RF-80A-15-LO (around 1950). The aircraft is not on display and was apparently moth-balled or destroyed. We supported F84 Thunder jets carrying bombs and rockets who supported the front lines of the allied forces fighting north of the 38th paralell. Col William L. Mitchell was the Co and Capt Hilderbrand was Adjutant. Sgt Turner was the Office supervisor. I worked in the office the whole year doing morning reports, metals submission for the pilots. I was a Senior Airman. Other Airmen were: Metigue, Schatzley, Martin, Carter, Gentry, Bishop, Price, Alexander. I have a picture of all of us when the Co was promoted to Bird Colonel in Feb l952. He was shot down on June 21st, 1951 and that's all I know. There was a report of a parachute sighting, but now that is questionable. His immediate family,e.g., my grandparents and my mother, have passed on and I still don't know anything about him. Horgan, retired, how now lives in Florida. He was with the 49th Fighter group, Itzuki and then Missawa, was Operations officer. He flew 132 missionsfrom Suwan, K-20 field. Is there anyone out there who knew Mike and could give me any information about him while serving with him in Korea. He is dying of brain cancer. He has told a number of people that most of the pilots that he knew during this period have died of cancer. He has made the statement that he handled atomic weapons with gloves only as all did during this period of time. He stated all the pilots did. He can not speak now and we are trying to determine the reason for this statement as he has never mentioned this before now to anyone. If anyone can shed a light on what he is talking about and is there a possible problem related to this era for these pilots. If you know of anyone that might know please forward this.
