burned on his legs badly and upon removing bandages we
discovered his wounds covered with maggots. Nasty
sight, but maggots had done a great job of removing
the dead tissue. The troop transports we went over

OBITUARY

Comments: Something you I feel you should be informed of:

On September 15, 1951 Lieutenant Colonel Franklin
B. Niharts 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines was attacked on
Hill 749 by die-hard NKPA troops who were charged to
stand or die. The 2nd Battalion took a torrent of fire
from 76-mm., 105-mm., and 122-mm. artillery as well as
82-mm., and 120-mm. mortars which, according to
division reports, reached an intensity that was
estimated to surpass that of any barrage yet
encountered by the First Marine Division in Korea.
Then began a frenzied North Korean ground attack. In
wave after human wave, with bugles and whistles
screaming signals, the North Koreans threw themselves
against the marine line. The marines bent but did not
break.
PFC Richard Blasongame upheld the highest
traditions of the United States Naval Service during
that night as the acting platoon sergeant of the heavy
machinegun platoon serving with COL Niharts Weapons
Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines. PFC Blasongames
extraordinary heroism was one reason why the line did
not break.
He was acting platoon sergeant in charge of the
machinegun emplacements at the point of the battalion
perimeter most exposed to attack. Again and again, the
North Koreans assaulted his emplacements through the
night. When gunners were wounded, he manned the guns.
He hurled grenades. He evacuated wounded. He rallied
his men. When ammunition and grenades became critically
short, he left his foxhole and exposed himself to a
hail of hostile fire in order to inform his commander
and supervise resupply.
When a grenade exploded under his last remaining
machinegun, inflicting wounds to his face and hands,
and jamming the traversing mechanism, PFC Blasongame
continued to fire through the night by moving the
tripod from side to side.
As morning dawned, only four survivors remained out
of his sixteen-man section. Two hundred and eighty-
seven enemy dead lay in front of his position. An
unknown number of enemy dead and wounded had been
carted away by their cohorts.
Acting platoon sergeant PFC Richard Blasongame was
recommended for the Medal of Honor. (From the book
We Claim the Title 2nd edition, 2000 by Burton F.
Anderson)
Because the paperwork was lost it was nine years
before his heroism was officially recognized, then he
was awarded the Navy Cross. He also was awarded two
Purple Hearts (one of which was for a separate action).
Richard Blasongame died at his home in Joshua Tree
on Monday February 21, 2011. He will be buried at the
National Cemetery in Riverside California on Monday
March 7th. He leaves his wife, four children and eight
grandchildren.

One of your fine officers passed away on May 10,2008.
1St Lt G. Guthrie Conyngham was 84 years old.
He was wounded in central Korea on Sept 14, 1951.
His son entered a entry 60426 on 2007-03-22.
Anyone from Guthries outfit remembering him would comfort the family with any responses. I have known Guthrie since possibly 1939 also his brother Jack also a Marine officer. Both gentleman of the first line. I was in Korea at the time Guthrie was and learned of his being wounded from my brother a former Marine in the 3Rd Marine Division of Iwo Jima, since passed away. At times in Korea our 3 man 101St Signal Bn radio relay team on some isolated hill would have a squad of Marines as guards--cake walk for them but deep sense of security to us--never enough thanks.

Comments: I have a book with the following information on Corporal William Shurts.........

THE SINGING MARINE

Corporal William Shurts, 21 of F. Company, 5th Marine Regiment, was hit by a sniper's bullet on a Korean hill. He died the next day. His inspirational singing brought cheer and courage to the trenches. His comrades described him as the "man who brought God to the front lines!" His favorite song was: "The Old Rugged Cross." How this song enheartened the men in the foxholes! Often, they would join with Corporal Shurts on the chorus. Passing from man to man, William spoke quietly to them of faith in God. "After he talked to us," a comrade wrote, "the dark foiled utterly. But for sinners he has a Gospel.

From the Victorious Life by Charles Trumbull.

Comments: My Father, Sgt Major Edward L. Crippen served in the Marine Corps from November 1941 until 1971. I recently found a number of photos taken in Korea. Possibly in 1953, some at the DMZ. There is one photo of a Sign in front of a tent "The Fighting 1st, Stable Able, included are hill 144, 76,and 82, also the words Cemetary Ridge, Rocket Ridge and Steel's Tunnel Blown up Jan 14, 1953. Can anyone tell me what unit this is? Is there anyone who might remember my late Father? Also found photos of football games, a fuzzy pup and various pics of unidentified Marines, training with various weapons.
